Most photographers who have wasted a session can trace the problem back to something they didn't verify before confirming the booking. This checklist exists to prevent that.
The 10-Point Photography Studio Rental Checklist
1. Ceiling Height
Ceiling height determines what you can shoot. For full-length portraits and editorial fashion, you need a minimum of 10 feet — preferably 12–14 feet. Product and e-commerce shoots can manage with 9 feet.
Ask: "What is the ceiling height in the main shooting area?"
2. Backdrop Availability and Condition
Seamless paper is the gold standard. Vinyl is acceptable but shows seams. Ask:
- How many backdrop colours are available?
- Are they hand-pulled or motorised?
- What is the condition of the white backdrop? (Scuffed white = grey in your shots.)
3. Strobe vs. Continuous Lighting
For stills photography, strobe lights (Bowens, Profoto, Godox) are essential. Continuous LED panels are acceptable for video but will limit your shutter speed flexibility for stills.
Ask: "What lighting is included — strobes or continuous? What is the wattage?"
4. Power Backup
Power cuts affect studios in Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, and most metro cities — especially in summer. Strobes draw significant current. Ask whether there is backup power for the shooting area and the AC unit.
5. Room Size and Shooting Distance
The shooting-to-subject distance determines your compression and depth of field. For product photography, a 10×10 ft room works. For automotive, architecture, or full-room set builds, you need significantly more.
Ask: "What are the room dimensions, and what is the maximum shooting distance?"
6. Changing Room and Talent Space
If you're shooting models or talent, confirm whether a private changing room is available. Shooting through an occupied changing area is a workflow problem and a privacy issue.
7. Equipment Included vs. Rented
Some studios include modifiers, light meters, and reflectors in the hourly rate. Others charge separately for every accessory. Get a clear list of what is included before confirming.
| Equipment | Often Included | Often Extra |
|---|---|---|
| Strobe heads | Yes | — |
| Softboxes and umbrellas | Sometimes | Sometimes |
| Light meter | Rarely | Yes (₹200–₹500/session) |
| Tethering cable and laptop | Rarely | Yes |
| Smoke machine / haze | No | Yes |
8. Cancellation and Reschedule Policy
The standard policy is 24–48 hours notice for a full refund. Some studios have 72-hour policies or charge a 20–50% cancellation fee. Read this before paying.
9. Access Time and Setup Time
Most studios charge from the moment you enter, including setup time. If you need 45 minutes to arrange a complex product set, that eats into your booked slot.
Ask: "Is setup time included in the booked hours or charged separately?"
10. Parking and Load-in
If you are bringing heavy gear, large props, or set elements, confirm:
- Is there ground-floor access or a freight lift?
- Is there parking on-site or within 100 metres?
- Is trolley/cart available for equipment load-in?
